The cool tip of the hand piece on the IPL photofacial device delivers a warm flash of bright light energy to about one square inch of skin. The flash lasts for only a split second, and one flash is delivered every two to four seconds as an intense pulse. This bright light is scientifically tailored to cause the destruction of: unsightly and unneeded spider veins; unhealthy skin infiltrates, like certain bacteria and microorganisms; and damaged cells that signal sun damage (brown spots). The destruction of these items is relatively easy to accomplish with the right type of light. At the same time, studies show that Intense Pulsed Light heats the dermis to above 65 degrees Celsius, which activates the skin to produce a wrinkle-filling material called collagen over the course of 5-12 weeks.

After a typical Scottsdale Photofacial laser procedure, most people see their treated skin become red and stay red for 15-90 minutes (though some people stay red for 1-2 days). Many patients report that in as little as two weeks later, the marks either disappear by being absorbed or disappear because the brown cells flake off of the body. Rosacea or red veins will diminish beginning one hour or one day following treatment, and may take up to 4 weeks to obtain noticeable results. Cherry angiomas should become darker right away, but may not appear to be much affected until 3-6 weeks post-treatment, at which point they should disappear, leaving healthy skin behind. Fine lines and wrinkles, or rough skin, should show improved smoothness 1-3 months after treatment. Five full-face Scottsdale Photofacial sessions spaced three weeks apart are normally required for optimal results.
